How to use it

  1. Type your data using capital letters, digits, spaces and - . $ / + %.
  2. Leave the check characters to ScanHatch: both are calculated automatically.
  3. Download and test with your scanner. Some scanners ship with Code 93 turned off.

Code 93 compared with Code 39

Code 93 was designed as a denser replacement for Code 39. Each character takes 9 modules made of three bars and three spaces, so the same text usually produces a noticeably shorter barcode than Code 39, often about a third shorter.

Two check characters, known as C and K, are always added before the stop pattern. Scanners verify and remove them, so they don't appear in the scanned value.

When to use it

  • When a system specifically asks for Code 93, as some logistics, postal and electronics labels do.
  • When Code 39 data needs to fit in a smaller space and the scanners support Code 93.
  • For new projects, Code 128 is usually the better choice: it's even more compact for digits and more widely enabled by default.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my scanner read Code 93?

Some scanners have Code 93 disabled out of the box. Check the scanner's configuration guide, usually a barcode you scan to enable it.

Can I see the check characters?

No. They're part of the printed symbol and are removed by the scanner.
